BECCA

As much as I loved the gaudy overly decorated lobby at work, I think I’ll tone it down a bit when I decorate our house for fall. I love the orange and red decorations, the twine and little scarecrows, and glittery pumpkins, but there’s something about Thanksgiving as a holiday that’s not nearly as much fun as Halloween. That’s a little ironic because Thanksgiving has the best food. It’s because of the food that I might like Thanksgiving better than any other holiday.

I’m all alone as I push my small shopping cart through the aisles at our local hobby and home décor store. Bayleigh is exhausted and didn’t have the energy to come with me, and my mom is busy visiting my grandparents to make sure they don’t get screwed over with the new car they want to purchase. Park is at work, and I am bored, so I came here to shop.

I’ve only lived in our house less than two months so there’s still quite a bit of work to do to turn the place into the home I want to have. For starters, Park is not a home decorating kind of person. He bought only the bare minimum furniture when he first moved in. Now that I’m here, we’ve been to the furniture store half a dozen times to get more stuff we needed. Like a full living room furniture set with a coffee table and end tables. (Park was using an upside town laundry basket as a coffee table when I moved in.) We got bedroom furniture and a new kitchen table and barstools to go under the granite bar. The idea of putting barstools there had never crossed his mind, despite the fact that he’s the one who remodeled the kitchen to include the bar. I love this man, but he’s terrible at home décor.

Which is why I’m here.

I peruse the aisles and find a fall themed table runner and a cute pumpkin and sunflower centerpiece. I get a wreath for the front door and a cute welcome mat that says “Happy fall y’all” in this perfectly Texan way. When my cart is full and I’m a little scared to see how much money I’m spending, I decide it’s time to get out of here before I do some real damage to my savings account.

At home, I unload all my new stuff, pulling off the tags and wrapping and finding new places for them around the house. This is so much more fun than wedding planning! The only person I have to worry about is myself. Well, and possibly Park, but I doubt he’ll care what kind of holiday decorations I use. When it comes to the wedding, I need to think about our guests, and the location, and the future—will our wedding look dated and ugly in 15 years? Hopefully not, because those photos will be preserved forever.

But fall decorations… I can throw those away in a few years and get news ones.

I chuckle to myself as I stretch out a sunflower garland across the mantle over the fireplace.
